Acute Stroke Treatment When It’s Needed Most

Strokes are medical emergencies that require immediate attention. When emergency treatment is needed, we provide fast, advanced care.

We offer acute endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) procedures to remove a blood clot from blocked brain blood vessel using newer surgical devices. In fact, we were among the first in Central PA to use the Solitaire FR Device. This technology uses a stent (a mesh-like tube typically used to push open narrowed blood vessels) to retrieve (grasp and pull out) blood clots. The device and others like it effectively opens up blocked brain arteries during a stroke.

Aneurysm treatment can prevent life-threatening rupture and stroke.

Brain aneurysms can occur without reason or warning. These abnormal bubbles, blisters or balloon-like pouches on brain arteries can burst, flooding the brain with blood and causing a devastating type of stroke.

Most aneurysms are not diagnosed until they are leaking or have already ruptured, causing irreparable damage. Screening using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) can be life saving for some people who are at high risk of developing an aneurysm. If you have a family history of brain aneurysm, screening is recommended.

Some conditions or diseases may also increase the risk of developing brain aneurysms, such as:

  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Fibromuscular dysplasia
  • Moyamoya disease
  • Polycystic kidney disease

The latest, most advanced treatment options

The neurosurgery team at Penn State Health can treat aneurysms to prevent rupture and stroke. The two major methods for aneurysm treatment are microsurgical aneurysm clipping and endovascular surgery. Both have advantages and disadvantages. A treatment that is appropriate for one patient may not be appropriate for another.

We also offer the latest, proven and promising treatment options. Penn State Health was the first hospital in central Pennsylvania to perform a minimally invasive brain aneurysm treatment called aneurysm coil embolization or aneurysm coiling. Our team continues to be at the forefront of endovascular aneurysm treatment using the latest flow diverting devices such as the Pipeline Embolic Device, Surpass Evolve, and WEB device.

Our neurosurgeons are leaders who are trained and experienced in all aspects of stroke and aneurysm treatment. Our team will create a care plan just for you, for the safest and most effective treatment possible.
